Notes to Accompany for Clarke, K. C. Analytical and Computer Cartography
Final Examination
Students should answer any four questions. Answers must be in short
essay form where called for. Please type your answers if possible. Final
answers and all outstanding assignments are due in my mailbox by 5:00pm,
May 21st. Late exams will be graded as zero.
2. What are the advantages of a TIN for cartographically storing
terrain as opposed to a grid?
3. What terrain symbolization methods are possible using only the
grid data structure?
4. Discuss the evolution of attribute data structures.
5. Show how a vector of (x,y) values can be transformed to any coordinate
system using a sequence of affine transformations.
6. Give the transformation matrix which will map a vector of latitudes
and longitudes onto any map projection other than the equatorial Mercator.
7. What are the variables associated with the problem of transforming
a set of irregularly spaced elevations points to a grid of uniform spacing.
Discuss the likely error associated with each of the variables.
8. In figure 1 above, the polygon labelled A has points with the
following coordinates. Using a formula covered in class, compute the area
of the polygon. Which way round were the points specified? How might you
deal with the problem of holes in this polygon?
