Honors:
Joel served as Chair of the Department 1991 to 1997; he was elected Chair of the Academic Senate for the 2006 - 2008 term; and he currently heads the UCSB Climate Hazard Group which specializes in looking at the climate-related components of food-security through the lens of geography, sensitive to the context created by societal factors. Joel is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Use of Remote Sensing for Human Welfare applications and the proposal review panels of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Global Change.
