SPECIALIST

The University of California, Santa Barbara, Center for Spatial Studies invites applicants with expertise in geographic information systems (GIS) to lead development of a geodatabase and associated services for a five-year project modeling the economy and providing policy analysis services for the Los Angeles Basin. The applicant should have a Ph.D. in Geography or a related field, with a strong GIS background, and be able to develop designs for the database and services within the scope of the project. The work is supported by the University of California’s Multicampus Research Program and Initiatives, through an award to the University of California, Riverside, and a subaward to UCSB. The successful applicant will be required to port existing data to UCSB, to develop a comprehensive database design, to identify and implement appropriate analytic and Web services, and to design interfaces for use by a wide range of users. Familiarity with the Esri suite of GIS software is required, together with UML or other database design tools, scripting languages, and Web design tools. The position may potentially continue through the funded life of the project, which has been under way for two years and expected to continue for another three years. The appointment is funded for approximately 36 months (ending 6/30/15), with an annual salary range from $59,976 – $64,404 (dependent on qualifications). This is a temporary appointment and any renewal or extension is dependent upon programmatic needs, availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Department of Geography

The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis seeks to fill multiple positions for graduate student research assistants working at the interface of computing and ecology.

The ideal candidates will have training or strong interest in some combination of information management, analytical programming, and the biological and/or geospatial sciences. Experience designing, developing, and supporting Web-enabled databases using tools such as LAMP or LAPP stacks, PostGIS, and Django; and data management and analysis experience with software such as R, Matlab, Python, or SAS, is desirable.

Responsibilities of the positions will include:

  • Interviewing and working with NCEAS’ scientists to create customized Web-enabled databases to support synthesis research topics.
  • Working with researchers to document and archive ecological and environmental data

The graduate assistants will work closely with resident and visiting scientists as well as the scientific computing staff at NCEAS.

We seek assistance for ten or more hours per week. Salary negotiable and may be comparable to a teaching assistantship; includes benefits and offset of registration fees.
