| Biographical Sketch | |
| Dr.
Matt Rice is a Directorate of Central
Intelligence Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the National
Center for Geographic Information and Analysis and Department
of Geography, University of California,
Santa Barbara. He studies geographic information systems, analysis
and representation of spatial uncertainty, cartographic data security, and
coupled auditory/cartographic display. Dr. Rice's dissertation,
Intellectual Property Control for Maps and Geographic Data, was completed
under the direction of Dr.
Michael Goodchild and accepted in 2005. While completing coursework
and personal research for Ph.D., Matt held a research assistantship at the
National Center for Geographic Information
and Analysis. During his tenure at NCGIA, he has managed the Learning
Resource Archive for the Center for Spatially
Integrated Social Sciences, and contributed to Project
Varenius, NCGIA’s effort to advance geographic information science.
Matt is also an investigator with the multidisciplinary
Haptic Soundscapes Project, which researches and develops tools for
presenting spatial information to blind and sight-impaired individuals using
auditory and force-feedback devices. Before arriving at Santa Barbara
in 1998, Matt attended Brigham Young University,
where he completed his bachelor of science and master of science degrees
(Geography - BS, Statistics
- BS, and Music - BA, 1995; Geography
- MS, 1998). While at BYU, Matt was a presidential full-tuition
scholar, a national merit finalist, and a multiple-year music performance
award winner. To apply his education in a practical framework, Matt
accepted a graduate research assistantship at the Los
Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and worked as a geographic information
systems specialist between 1996 and 1998 (casual status 1998 - 2000).
While at LANL, Matt’s responsibilities included cartographic and geographic
information systems support for geologic modeling and environmental remediation
activities. |
